What is Telehealth?

Through audio and video over the Internet, you can meet with your therapist on the go from your desktop, laptop, tablet, or mobile device (iOS or Android) – it’s your choice!

Telehealth allows us to connect anywhere with secure and convenient appointments that save you time and hassle. There’s no need to deal with traffic when you can schedule and attend your appointments directly from a laptop or mobile device.

Wondering if online therapy is as effective as in-person therapy?

Yes, it is! Research has shown that online therapy IS as effective as in-person therapy for many types of issues, such as depression and anxiety.

In fact, some research has shown that online therapy can be more effective than in-person therapy because of the convenience of online therapy. By not traveling into the office, clients save money in travel costs and feel less stressed about getting to the appointment.

In addition, clients may be more consistent with their appointments because of the convenience of online therapy.

Especially now during the pandemic, people may not feel comfortable with in-person sessions but can benefit from online sessions.

Even though online therapy can be more convenient than in-person therapy, online therapy may have some limitations. Because of technology limitations, I may not hear what you are saying and may need to ask you to repeat things. Also, technology might fail before or during the telehealth psychotherapy session. And even though I can see your face (yay!) during online sessions, I may not see your body language.

But don’t worry! In our experience, connection issues do not occur that often. If connection issues arise, we will continue the session over the phone. And if I feel like I am missing something because I can’t see you clearly, I may ask you to describe your feelings, thoughts, and actions in more detail. In our experience, online therapy has worked wonderfully for our clients who chose telehealth!

Online therapy might not be appropriate in all circumstances…

For someone dealing with a serious addiction or has more severe symptoms of mental illness and is unable to function at all, in-person therapy is a better choice.

In addition, in-person therapy may be a better bet for those who respond better to more personal environments.

To determine which is a better fit for you, we will discuss your specific circumstances and personal preferences to make the best choice for you.

Yes, it’s online… but it IS secure!

We use a HIPAA-compliant platform called SimplePractice, which makes sure that all of your information remains secure in an online world.

But to make sure your confidentiality is protected, you’ll want to be aware of your environment while talking to your therapist. There is the possibility that a family member or coworker could overhear you if you’re not in a private place.

Seriously, Mom, can you give me some privacy?!

Making the most of your online therapy experience…

In addition to ensuring that you’re in a private place away from eavesdroppers, here are some things you can do (and not do) so that your session goes well…

When we provide psychotherapy or consultation through Telehealth, you will click the link to join the video call emailed to you through Telehealth by SimplePractice. SimplePractice is our practice management software for scheduling, case management, telehealth, and therapy notes. SimplePractice uses HIPAA-compliant software so your information will be securely kept.

What equipment do I need?

To participate in Telehealth appointments, you need one of the following devices: 1. Desktop computer with a webcam and speakers 2. Laptop computer with built-in webcam and speakers 3. Tablet device with built-in webcam and speakers 4. Smartphone (Note: To use a smartphone, you must first download Telehealth by SimplePractice – available for iOS or Android in the app store). You will also need an Internet connection that is at least 10mbps. For optimal results, a reliable, high-speed Internet connection with a bandwidth of 10 Mbps will minimize connection issues and provide the best quality.

Where’s the best place to do a video call?

When deciding the best place in your home, you will want to choose a private space away from household members, coworkers, pets, or other potential distractions. Here are some additional recommendations:

  • Adjust your light. Some small lighting tweaks that can have a huge impact include placing a lamp or other light source behind your monitor, pointed toward you. Also, make sure you don’t have too much light behind you. If you’re on a laptop, make sure the camera is at eye level and not pointing up at the ceiling lights or down at the floor.
  • Choose a quiet, private location. Identify a suitable room that is private and free of distractions. To keep background noise to a minimum, close any doors and shut any windows.
